Job summary

Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) in Oxford, United Kingdom, seeks a (Senior) Computational Genomics Scientist to design and evaluate novel algorithms translating metagenomic sequencing into actionable clinical and public health insights.

You will advance ML/AI methods in pathogen genomics, collaborating with bioinformaticians and software engineers to deliver robust, scalable workflows for infectious disease diagnostics.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent in a quantitative field such as computational biology, computer science, mathematics, or physics.
• Track record of developing computational algorithms or tools in the genomics space (e.g., sequence search/storage, genome assembly/annotation, pangenome graphs, phylogenetics).
• AI/ML: ownership of model training and evaluation at scale with understanding of underlying methods.
• Strong programming skills (Python; C/C++/Rust) and software development best practices (version control, CI/CD).
• Experience in microbial genomics or metagenomics is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and evaluate novel computational algorithms for taxonomic classification and antimicrobial resistance.
• Develop ML/AI techniques to address pathogen genomics problems with collaborators.
• Validate and benchmark methods using public and internal datasets.
• Implement methods in scalable, reproducible, modular workflows with software engineers.
• Communicate technical work clearly to interdisciplinary teams.
