Job summary

Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT) in Oxford seeks a Computational Biologist to bridge microbiology and AI. You will transform complex biological data into robust datasets, build bioinformatics solutions, and design evaluations for foundation models, working alongside AI researchers and engineers.

You will ensure biological data is sound for machine learning, develop Python workflows, and contribute to scalable, reproducible research that impacts real-world biology and health applications.

Qualifications

• Extensive genomics and computational biology experience, incl. assembly, alignment, and variant analysis.
• Experience with large-scale genomics datasets, data preparation and modelling.
• Proven ability to translate biological problems into computational methods.
• High proficiency in Python for data processing and modelling.

Responsibilities

• Structure, curate, and transform large-scale microbiology data for use in machine learning systems
• Define biologically grounded tasks, representations, and evaluation frameworks aligned with real biological signal
• Interrogate datasets, methods, and model outputs to identify bias, leakage, and invalid assumptions
• Apply, adapt, and critically assess state-of-the-art bioinformatics methods in real-world settings
• Build robust, reproducible Python workflows and collaborate closely with research and engineering teams
