Job summary

The Paediatrics department at Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Senior Clinical Fellow. This 6 month opportunity offers rotational experience across general paediatrics, neonatology, emergency care and sub‑specialties. The Post holder will gain advanced skills in acute and chronic management, leadership and multidisciplinary coordination, preparing for consultant level practice. These posts include on‑call duties (Tier 2 rota), ward rounds, clinics, procedures, teaching and quality improvement projects. Training is supervised by an Educational Supervisor, with ePortfolio maintenance and ARCP progression aligned to GMC and RCPCH standards.

Responsibility
  • Deliver high‑quality service to paediatric patients of Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide care across sites, attending multi‑disciplinary meetings; may extend to GP surgeries/health centres.
  • Manage continuing care and treatment of patients, performing duties per job plan, delegating appropriately and training staff.
  • Support acute paediatrics, neonates and A&E for timely patient flow.
  • Lead ward rounds, triage referrals and manage complex cases.
  • Prepare patients for treatments/procedures, including post‑operative care.
  • Offer consultations and advisory services to colleagues, including timely discharge summaries.
  • Collaborate on high‑quality, timely service delivery, meeting Trust and departmental objectives.
  • Supervise, train and manage junior staff (ST1–ST4) through teaching, assessments and CPD.
  • Participate in Tier 2 on‑call rota for 24/7 emergency/urgent services, shared equally.
  • Engage in clinical audit and quality improvement under local arrangements.
  • Maintain continuing professional development with Trust support, staying current with evidence‑based practice.

Qualifications and experience
  • Essential qualifications:
    • Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
    • MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
    • Training completion ST1–ST2 or equivalent.
    • Membership examination with relevant UK Royal College.
    • APLS/EPALS Certification.
    • NLS.
  • Desirable qualifications:
    • Higher degree.
    • Attendance at recognised management courses.
    • Formal qualification in teaching/education.
  • Essential experience:
    • Completed at least four years full‑time postgraduate training (or equivalent).
    • Clinical training equivalent to CT/ST3 level in relevant specialty.
    • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
    • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a wide range of problems.
    • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care.
  • Desirable experience:
    • Previous NHS experience in specialty of minimum 12 months.
    • Ability to use evidence‑based and clinical audit to support decision making.
    • Taster weeks or electives in paediatrics.
    • International experience.
Management and administrative experience
  • Essential:
    • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
    • Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit.
Teaching experience
  • Essential:
    • Ability to organise and deliver teaching across the undergraduate curriculum.
    • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines.
    • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates.
    • Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation and completion of audit projects.
  • Desirable:
    • Critical appraisal skills.
Research experience
  • Essential:
    • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
    • Awareness of current specialty‑specific developments and initiatives.
  • Desirable:
    • Publications in relevant peer‑reviewed journals in the last 5 years.
    • Evidence of having undertaken original research.
