The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is seeking trainees in anaesthetics or intensive care medicine for a six-month position starting August 2025. The role involves clinical management in ICU, extensive training in ultrasound, and opportunities for research and professional development.
This post is available from August 2025 for an initial period of six months, renewable by mutual agreement. Applicants can be trainees in anaesthetics or intensive care medicine, an acute medicine specialty or emergency medicine (A&E). You must have experience of intensive care medicine and preferably airway skills. They should possess MRCP, FRCA or MCEM as appropriate to their background.
The ICU (together with the anaesthetic department) is known for using Enhanced Recovery and Goal Directed Techniques for major surgical cases, particularly effective in hepatobiliary and oesophagogastric patients. The hospital attracts many tertiary referral cases related to hepatobiliary and oesophageal pathology. Specialist expertise includes management of severe acute pancreatitis, hepatic failure, and perforated oesophagus. The Unit is staffed 24/7 by three tiers, each with eight junior doctors, supported by full intensive care specialist consultants. It is recognized by IBTICM for advanced intensive care training and offers a comprehensive weekly educational program for trainee doctors.
This role involves clinical management on ICU and significant engagement with acute point of care imaging. You will have the opportunity to learn from leading ultrasound trainers, gain relevant accreditations, and work closely with experienced radiologists.
You will receive training in trans-thoracic echocardiography under the intensive care society's FICE scheme, aiming for accreditation within six months. Further training may include BSE level 1, BSE accreditation, or European Diploma of Echocardiography. Extensive training in point of care ultrasound will enable you to achieve accreditation to level 1 thoracic standard (RCR) and modules for the CUSIC or FAMUS schemes, including lung, vascular, DVT, abdominal, neuraxial, and FAST ultrasound.
