Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Be resident on-site to triage and assess critical major trauma patients immediately upon arrival (< 5 minutes), and undertake lifesaving surgery as needed.
  2. Be an integral part of the resuscitation team.
  3. Assist the Consultant (General) Trauma Surgeon or other subspecialty surgeons in decision-making, transfer to theatres, and emergency phase I surgery.
  4. Attend the daily general surgical hand-over meeting from 7:30 to 8:00 am to be informed of overnight issues with trauma/emergency surgery patients.
  5. Participate in daily ITU/HDU and trauma ward rounds as a key surgical communicator.
  6. Participate in the daily morning trauma meeting and implement surgical plans derived from it.
  7. Provide surgical continuity of care for all major trauma patients, including performing or assisting in delayed emergency procedures.
  8. Manage patients on the Trauma ward daily, maintaining contact with the on-call General Surgery consultant and other specialists as required, and coordinate management plans.
  9. Prepare surgical data for comprehensive monthly audits.
  10. Rotate through King's specialty services to receive trauma-related subspecialty training.
  11. Support outpatient minor operations as required.

Person specification

Education and Qualification

  • Registrable medical qualification
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience equivalent to SpR level
  • Advanced General Surgery experience

Desirable criteria

  • Specialist Trauma/Emergency Surgical experience

Applicants must have appropriate UK professional registration. This position is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020, and a Disclosure check will be required through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
