Job summary

BEAR Scotland Limited in the UK is seeking a Principal Bridge Engineer to lead Mechanical and Electrical aspects within our Major Bridges team. Location: Inverness with occasional travel to Stepps and Perth, hybrid office/remote.

You will drive design, inspection and maintenance schemes for complex structures and manage multi-disciplinary teams. You will oversee technical approvals, ensure CDM compliance, and collaborate with clients, regulators and contractors to deliver safe, high-quality

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering is required.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng/MICE or equivalent) is required.
• Significant experience in design, assessment and maintenance of bridge structures.
• Experience with moveable bridges or complex structures is desirable.
• Knowledge of Mechanical & Electrical systems in bridge infrastructure is desirable.
• Experience in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment is desirable.
• Proven project and team management experience.
• Strong understanding of relevant standards (e.g., DMRB).
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a high-performing design and inspection team.
• Oversee maintenance and improvement schemes for major bridges.
• Manage outline and detailed design, including technical approvals.
• Coordinate consultants, contractors and internal teams to deliver schemes safely and efficiently.
• Ensure compliance with design standards and departures processes.
• Prepare tender documentation and support procurement activities.
• Oversee project delivery, including programme, budget, and quality management.
• Ensure Compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards within BEAR’s management system.
• Fulfil CDM duties, including Principal Designer responsibilities where required.
• Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
• Ensure environmental assessments and mitigation measures are implemented.
