Job summary

NHS Lanarkshire is recruiting for a Biomedical Scientist to process a broad range of specialist and routine laboratory diagnostics in Pathology, using a range of measurements on patient samples.

You will provide advice to clinicians on test appropriateness and time-scales, supervise Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants, and perform daily instrument testing and quality control to ensure accurate results for patient care.

Qualifications

• State registration with the Health Professions Council is mandatory.
• BSc honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, acceptable for HPC registration.
• Formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline specific procedures.
• Evidence of continuing professional development via specialist courses, training on new instrumentation or reflective practice.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for own work and operate complex equipment, resolving problems with specialist training.

• Daily instrument testing, first line maintenance, fault finding and QC for equipment used by staff.

The Role

• Process a broad range of specialist and routine laboratory diagnostic investigations in Pathology using a range of scientific measurements and technical procedures on patient samples.
• Provides advice to clinicians and other healthcare staff as to appropriateness of tests and time-scales.
• Responsible for own work and uses specialist training to operate complex equipment and solve problems.
• Acts as a mentor to less experienced Biomedical Scientists and participates in training /supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants.

In this key role, you will:

• Adherence to policies and procedures relevant to all areas of work in accordance with Departmental, Directorate, Hospital and regulatory requirements.
• Adherence to NHSL policies and current data protection legislation.
• Validates and authorises clinical laboratory results, issuing reports/results to service users e.g. clinicians. Recommending further tests/actions when required with referral to more senior staff /Consultant as appropriate.
• Supervision of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants working in that area
• Daily instrument testing, first line maintenance, repair, technical fault finding and performance of quality control on a daily basis for equipment for own use and for other staff to operate.

• Formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline specific procedures.
• Evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation and learning through reflective practice.
