Job summary

Fanatics Markets is building a regulated, high-availability backend platform for its exchange. We seek a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) to own core services, drive architecture, and ship production-grade code in Java (Kotlin a plus).

You’ll work on order processing, market data, and regulatory reporting, with modern Java services and observable, compliant infrastructure. Remote UK candidates welcome, with a stipend for home office setup and visa sponsorship not available.

Qualifications

• 5+ years building scalable backend applications or distributed systems.
• Experience in regulated exchange or financial infrastructure is strongly preferred.
• Strong production experience with Java; Kotlin a plus.
• Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub) in high-throughput contexts.
• Strong data integrity and financial-grade data modelling in PostgreSQL.
• Solid understanding of software design principles (SOLID, DRY) and testing methodologies.
• Familiarity with regulatory requirements (MNPI, audit trails) and compliant practices.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and safe deployment practices.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, testing, and deployment of high-performance backend services for the FMX exchange.
• Own services end-to-end: specs, implementation, instrumentation, deployment, monitoring, iteration.
• Modernise existing Java codebase while building new services in Java and possibly Kotlin.
• Contribute to architecture for order processing, market data distribution, and trade lifecycle management.
• Build and maintain daily reporting pipelines ensuring data integrity and audit trails.
• Participate in 24/7 on-call rotations and contribute to SLOs, alerting strategy, and incident response.
• Manage data models for contracts, orders, positions, and settlements with regulatory auditability.
• Collaborate with DevOps/Platform to ensure observability, scalability, and MNPI compliance.
• Conduct thorough code reviews to uphold quality, security, and maintainability.
• Leverage AI tools to accelerate development while maintaining standards for security and correctness.
• Establish and document team standards for AI usage, prompts, and validation.
• Contribute to a fast-paced environment, unblocking others and shaping processes.
