Job summary

iwoca is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for the Payments Infrastructure team in London. You will own services end to end, shaping a platform that powers card payments, fraud monitoring, and cashback payouts.

You will collaborate with product to decide priorities, scale payments within card scheme rules, and grow the platform as iwoca expands. The role emphasizes robust backend design and distributed systems, with practical AI support.

Qualifications

• Payment systems designed and run in production with high availability.
• Card authorisation and clearing; tracing transactions end-to-end.
• Deep backend engineering expertise in at least one OO language.
• Distributed systems using microservices, REST APIs and asynchronous messaging.
• Experience using AI to scale engineering output with judgement.
• Clear written and spoken communication; adapt detail to audience.

Responsibilities

• Own services end-to-end from design to production.
• Shape platform architecture with the principal engineer.
• Collaborate with product to decide what to build and how.
• Scale payments within card scheme rules and regulatory framework.
• Develop and deploy new services like authorisation, monitoring and rewards.
