Job summary

Hyperexponential is building an AI-driven underwriting platform for insurers, combining data, AI, and expert input. You’ll join the Workflow Underwriting stream, shaping the architecture, domain models, and agent-assisted workflows from day one.

You’ll work directly with underwriters and engineers to deliver robust, scalable software. You’ll leverage Kotlin/Java in backend services, apply judgment in design, and responsibly use AI tools like Claude to accelerate delivery while maintaining

Qualifications

• Experience building and running backend systems in Kotlin, Java, or another JVM language.
• Judgement in architecture and system design: what to build now vs later.
• Proven track record shipping software that solved a real customer problem.
• Self-starting approach: identify high-value problems.
• Clear communication with underwriters, executives, and engineers.
• Genuine appetite for problems with no precedent.
• Responsible use of AI coding tools with a critical eye.
• Receptiveness to feedback and willingness to improve.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate backend services in Kotlin or Java, and own them in production.
• Turn ambiguous underwriting problems into reliable software.
• Shape APIs, domain models, persistence, reliability, and observability.
• Develop deep underwriting domain knowledge and challenge requirements.
• Design and build agent-assisted workflows and decide where humans stay in control.
• Use AI coding tools as a core part of your workflow while ensuring quality and security.
• Collaborate with frontend engineers, product partners, and client teams across boundaries.
• Provide direct feedback to raise the engineering bar.
