Job summary

Network Rail is seeking an experienced Telecoms Engineer to lead renewal and enhancement work for national telecoms infrastructure. You will drive engineering governance, asset management, and renewals planning across Milton Keynes and London locations.

Ideal candidates hold Incorporated/Chartered Engineer status with strong project management and safety risk experience, and a commitment to standards and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead renewals, refurbishment and enhancement work bank for telecoms infrastructure.
  • Specify and accept renewal requirements for telecom engineering works and equipment.
  • Support after handover to ensure scope changes are agreed and deliverables met.
  • Provide systems engineering input for maintenance regimes of telecom assets.
  • Maintain accurate records of telecom assets and configurations.
  • Lead asset condition inspections for telecom assets and renewals planning.
  • Assess derogation and non-compliance against telecom standards.
  • Participate in assurance processes including audits and verification.
  • Monitor telecom asset performance and drive corrective actions as needed.

About the role

Duration: Permanent.

Band & Salary: Band 3C, £55,596 - £67,813 per annum.

What does the average day look like?

Telecoms Operations, operate and run all Telecoms services from hardware to Applications supports. Capabilities are embedded within the functions such as Contract & Supplier Management, Governance, Risk and Control, Service Strategy & Transition, Asset Management & Architecture, Engineering & design to ensure the smooth running of introduced technologies and governance/assurance/safety of services against ITIL/regulatory standards. The Asset Management & Architecture Central team that concentrates and bolsters 'forward looking', strategic architecture resources across all domains to meet the future capabilities of the different services we will deliver today and in the future.

The team is responsible for operating all of Network Rail's telecoms assets and networks. This responsibility includes managing asset life cycles as well as the development, delivery and support of first-class telecommunication networks and services.

The Network Rail Telecom (NRT) team is responsible for operating all of Network Rail's telecoms assets and networks. This responsibility includes managing asset life cycles as well as the development, delivery and support of first-class telecommunication networks and services.

In simple terms, NRT transports data between A and B enabling Network Rail to run operationally both on the railway (signalling, customer information systems, CCTV cameras etc.) and as a business (desk phones, mobile devices, data connections etc.). NRT is also playing a key role in the realisation of Network Rail's digital railway aspiration which requires huge amounts of data managed securely to work.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Central Telecom renewal, refurbishment, and enhancement work bank to deliver the requirements of the national telecom infrastructure platform.
  • Lead the specification and acceptance of the renewal requirements criteria for Telecom engineering works including design approval and any specific requirements for acceptance of the equipment into maintenance.
  • Following handover to delivery, support the development and implementation of projects to confirm the renewals requirements are correctly interpreted, that any changes in scope are agreed, the agreed deliverables in the asset management plan are delivered and that the scheme delivers the project remit. Determine and advise on the implications if work is not undertaken including impact on appropriate asset measures and outputs.
  • Provide Telecom systems engineering input to the determination of appropriate engineering maintenance regimes and activity volumes for Telecom assets in accordance with company policies, standards and specifications.
  • Check that accurate and comprehensive records relating to the existence, configuration and modification history of Telecom engineering assets are maintained and that they accurately reflect their current operational status.
  • Lead the development and delivery of the asset condition inspections that will inform the Telecom asset condition database, the renewals work bank and provide a comprehensive engineering support service.
  • Review and make recommendations on derogation and non-compliance applications to Telecom systems engineering related standards.
  • Participate in, and lead as directed, Telecom engineering activities in support assurance processes including the maintenance audit programmes and engineering verification.
  • Monitor the reliability and performance of Telecom systems related assets across the route and instigate, lead and participate in the implementation of corrective actions to improve as required.
Your experience and skills

Meet the essential criteria

  • Incorporated Engineer.
  • Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent.
  • Membership of relevant professional institution.
  • Substantial Telecom engineering experience, particularly related to renewals and enhancements.
  • Holds relevant professional licences and technical qualifications, or capable of achieving within reasonable timescales.
  • An understanding of policy and technical, safety and performance standards relating to signal engineering.
  • Holds valid UK driving licence, or eligible and willing to obtain.
  • Chartered Engineer.
  • An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of investment processes and procedures, including relevant computer systems.
  • Experience in the integration of complex engineering systems.
  • Knowledge of project management techniques.
