Network Rail is seeking a Senior Asset Engineer to lead the East Midlands Route Renewals Portfolio, delivering multi million pound civils schemes. You will sponsor systems engineers, manage budgets, and drive risk and opportunity management across the renewals programme.

The role requires strong leadership, civil engineering experience, and a proactive approach to collaboration with industry stakeholders and internal teams.

Qualifications

• Incorporated Engineer status or equivalent, with professional registration.
• Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent.
• Membership of a relevant professional institution is expected.
• Substantial civils/system renewals engineering experience, with renewals focus.
• Licences and technical qualifications, or plan to obtain them in reasonable timescales.
• Understanding of policy, safety and performance standards for signal engineering.
• Valid UK driving licence or willingness to obtain one.

Responsibilities

• Develop route strategies and prioritise workbank; manage programme changes.
• Lead renewal, refurbishment and enhancement work banks to meet NR goals.
• Specify renewal requirements criteria for engineering works and obtain approvals.
• Support handover to delivery; ensure scope changes are agreed and deliverables achieved.

About The Role

An exciting time to join our East Midlands - Asset Management team, responsible for the management of multi million pound civils schemes. Our diverse railway portfolio of Buildings, Geotechnical and Structural assets. As we move towards Great British Railways, this is a period of unprecedented collaboration as the industry comes together with a shared vision for the future. This transformation places a renewed focus on our rail system ensuring they are safe, sustainable, and fit for purpose to meet the needs of the railway for years to come.

This role can be based at London Stratford Place or Derby.

In the Senior Asset Engineer role, you will lead and manage the East Midlands Route Renewals Portfolio, ensuring the successful delivery of Network Rail's strategic objectives, business plan commitments, and performance targets. Provide leadership to a team of systems engineers, delivering specialist engineering expertise, sponsorship, and assurance across the renewals portfolio through internal teams and the supply chain. Act as the primary point of contact for the East Midlands renewals programme, with accountability for portfolio governance, budget management, delivery performance, and the effective management of risks and opportunities arising from change.

Build strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders across the industry to ensure alignment between operational, engineering, and commercial objectives, while confidently engaging in both technical engineering and financial discussions to ensure effective decision-making.

Key Accountabilities

• Contribute to the development of route strategies and the prioritised workbank. Manage the inclusion of allocated items into appropriate programmes and monitor through to completion, including approval of programme changes. Determine and advise on the implications if work is not undertaken in the recommended time-frame including impact on appropriate asset measures and outputs.
• Lead the development and implementation of the [B&C] renewal, refurbishment and enhancement work bank to deliver Network Rail's goals.
• Lead the specification and acceptance of the renewal requirements criteria for [B&C engineering works including design approval and any specific requirements for acceptance of the equipment into maintenance.
• Following handover to delivery, support the development and implementation of projects to confirm the renewals requirements are correctly interpreted, that any changes in scope are agreed, the agreed deliverables in the asset management plan are delivered and that the scheme delivers the project remit.
• Lead the provision of [Discipline] engineering input to enhancement projects such that they are specified and accepted in accordance with company asset policies and standards.
• Identify issues of national significance and elevate to the national team. Support the development and review of national standards relating to renewals and enhancements.
• Check that accurate and comprehensive records relating to the existence, configuration and modification history of [Discipline] engineering assets are maintained and that they accurately reflect their current 'as built' status.
• Participate in investigations of incidents as required.
• Lead and participate in engineering verification activities in support of the verification programme.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of route asset management plans.
• Carry out asset condition inspections that will inform the [Discipline] asset condition database and the renewals work bank

Essential Criteria

• Incorporated Engineer
• Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent
• Membership of relevant professional institution
• Substantial [B&C] engineering experience, particularly related to renewals and enhancements
• Holds relevant professional licences and technical qualifications, or capable of achieving within reasonable timescales
• An understanding of policy and technical, safety and performance standards relating to signal engineering
• Holds valid UK driving licence, or eligible and willing to obtain

Desirable Criteria

• Chartered Engineer
• An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
• Knowledge of investment processes and procedures, including relevant computer systems
• Experience in the integration of complex engineering systems
• Knowledge of project management techniques

Salary: £55,596 to £67,813 per annum (plus an Inner London allowance of £3,270 per annum for London based roles).
