Full Job Description

Could You Be the Person Who Helps a Young Person Believe in Themselves?

We are looking for a positive, patient and encouraging SEND Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support to a young student with ADHD within a mainstream school.

This young person is able to access their education but benefits from having a consistent adult alongside them to help them stay focused, remain on track with their learning and build confidence in their own abilities.

We are not looking for someone to simply sit beside the learner and tell them to complete their work. We want someone who can build a genuine relationship, recognise their strengths and provide the right balance of encouragement, structure and independence.

Your Role Will Include
  • Providing consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day.
  • Helping the learner stay focused and engaged during lessons.
  • Breaking larger tasks into smaller, achievable steps where appropriate.
  • Providing gentle prompts and redirection when attention begins to drift.
  • Supporting organisation, routines and transitions throughout the day.
  • Helping the learner develop strategies to manage their attention and workload more independently.
  • Providing encouragement and celebrating progress to help build confidence and self-esteem.
  • Supporting the learner to recognise their own strengths and capabilities.
  • Helping to reduce frustration or feelings of being overwhelmed with schoolwork.
  • Working alongside teaching staff to adapt support where necessary.
  • Encouraging positive relationships and participation within the wider school environment.
  • Gradually promoting independence rather than creating reliance on 1:1 support.
Who Are We Looking For?
  • Has previous experience supporting children or young people with ADHD, SEND or additional learning needs.
  • Ideally holds a Teaching Assistant or SEND-related qualification.
  • Understands ADHD and how this can impact attention, organisation, motivation and confidence within the classroom.
  • Is patient, encouraging and able to provide positive reinforcement.
  • Can make learning feel manageable without putting unnecessary pressure on the learner.
  • Is confident building positive relationships with young people.
  • Can be consistent and maintain clear, appropriate boundaries.
  • Is proactive and can recognise when the learner needs additional support or when they should be encouraged to work independently.
  • Is reliable and committed to providing consistency Monday to Friday.
  • Holds, or is willing to obtain, an enhanced DBS and complete all relevant safeguarding checks.
The Ideal Person

The right person for this role will be someone who can become a positive and consistent presence in this young person’s school day.

You might already be an experienced SEND TA, Learning Support Assistant or 1:1 Teaching Assistant. Alternatively, you may have experience through youth work, mentoring, sports coaching or another role where you have supported young people to develop confidence and reach their potential.

Ultimately, we are looking for someone who can help this learner feel capable, confident and successful at school, while giving them the strategies and encouragement they need to become increasingly independent.
