Job description

SEND Teaching Assistant

First For Education is seeking a compassionate, proactive and hands‑on SEND Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEND setting in Harborne, Birmingham, supporting children and young people with a range of complex and additional needs.

This is a full‑time, long‑term position and an opportunity to work within a highly supportive environment where patience, consistency and genuinely understanding the individual child are at the heart of what they do.

The role will involve providing practical, learning and physical support to pupils throughout the school day. Experience supporting movement, mobility or physical needs would be highly beneficial, although equally important is finding the right person with the right attitude – someone who is hands‑on, willing to learn and genuinely wants to make a difference.

SEND Teaching Assistant benefits:
  • Competitive daily rate £90-£110 per day, dependent on experience
  • PAYE paid weekly
  • Full‑time, long‑term opportunity
  • Access to specialist SEND training and CPD opportunities
  • Dedicated consultant support throughout your placement
  • £150 refer‑a‑friend scheme
The ideal SEND Teaching Assistant will:
  • Have previous hands‑on experience supporting children or young people with SEND
  • Ideally have experience supporting pupils with movement, mobility or physical needs
  • Be comfortable providing practical support throughout the school day
  • Have a calm, patient and compassionate approach
  • Be confident working 1:1 and within small groups
  • Be able to build strong and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Understand that every child's needs, communication and abilities are different
  • Be proactive and willing to get involved rather than waiting to be directed
  • Be reliable, resilient and work well as part of a close‑knit team
  • Most importantly, have the right attitude and a genuine willingness to learn

Previous experience within a specialist SEND school, complex‑needs provision, care environment or similar setting would be advantageous, but we are equally interested in people with relevant hands‑on experience who have the right values and are keen to develop.

This isn't simply about having every qualification on paper. We're looking for somebody who wants to understand the pupils they support, get involved and become a positive and consistent part of their school day.

We're proud to be an inclusive employer, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds and committed to creating accessible opportunities across education.

As part of our registration process, you'll need an enhanced DBS check and we'll need to see and copy your original qualifications before any placement. Teaching roles require Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
