Job summary

Aspire People is seeking a caring SEN Teaching Assistant to support children with SEMH, autism, trauma and challenging behaviours. The role focuses on safeguarding, building trust, and helping pupils engage with learning.

You will work closely with teachers, SEN staff and other professionals, providing 1:1 and small-group support to develop academic and emotional skills in a specialist setting.

SEN Teaching Assistant - SEMH, Autism, Trauma & Behaviour

We are looking for a caring, resilient and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join our team, supporting children and young people with a range of additional needs, including SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), autism, trauma and behaviours that may present as challenging.

The successful candidate will be passionate about helping children feel safe, understood and able to engage in learning. You will work closely with teachers, SEN staff and other professionals to provide consistent, individualised support and help pupils develop both academically and emotionally.

The role will involve:

• Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with additional needs.
• Supporting children with SEMH, autism and trauma-related needs.
• Helping pupils regulate their emotions and develop positive coping strategies.
• Building trusting, respectful relationships with children and young people.
• Supporting positive behaviour and following individual behaviour and support plans.
• Helping pupils access learning and participate positively in school life.
• Using a calm, patient and consistent approach when responding to challenging behaviour.
• Working closely with teachers, SENCOs and other professionals.
• Maintaining appropriate safeguarding and professional boundaries.
• Encouraging pupils' confidence, independence and social development.

We are looking for someone who:

• Understands that behaviour can be a form of communication.
• Is able to build positive relationships while maintaining clear boundaries.

• Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
• Is willing to learn and develop their understanding of trauma-informed and autism-aware practice.
• Experience within a specialist school, alternative provision, residential setting or similar environment would be advantageous, but training and support will be provided for the right candidate.
