That might sound straightforward, but it's something I learned very quickly during my own time working within specialist education.
The strongest SEND educators aren't necessarily the loudest, strictest or most qualified people in the room.
They're often the consistent ones.
The people who stay calm when things aren't going to plan, take the time to understand the young person behind the behaviour and can maintain boundaries without damaging the relationship they've worked hard to build.
If that sounds like the way you work, I'm currently recruiting across a range of SEND and SEMH schools throughout East Sussex, and I'd be interested in speaking with you.
I work with specialist primary and secondary settings looking for:
There's no single type of school or role I'm trying to fill through this advert.
The point is to connect with good educators, understand what they're looking for and then explore the settings where they might genuinely fit.
For some roles, yes.
For others, absolutely not.
Direct experience is always useful, but I've seen brilliant people enter specialist education from mainstream schools, care, youth work, coaching, mentoring and other people-focused backgrounds.
What schools consistently value is someone who can:
SEND can be demanding, and I don't think there's much value in pretending otherwise.
But if you enjoy relationship-led work and want to see the direct impact your presence can have on a young person's education, it can be incredibly rewarding.
Before recruitment, I spent several years working directly within SEND education.
That experience still shapes how I recruit today.
Different SEND schools can require completely different personalities and skill sets, so I want to know more than what's written on your CV. I'll take the time to understand your experience, strengths and what you're looking for before discussing suitable opportunities.
You’ll need an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered on the Update Service. If you don’t currently hold one, you’ll need to apply through us and join the Update Service. I’ll guide you through the process, though the associated cost is covered by the applicant.

Whether you’ve worked in SEND for ten years or you’re starting to wonder whether specialist education might suit you, I’d be happy to have a conversation.
