Job summary

GSL Education in Wakefield (WF5) is seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with additional needs. The role involves one-to-one and small-group support to help access learning, foster independence and inclusion within daily school life.

The ideal candidate will have prior SEN or education experience, strong communication skills, and an enhanced DBS certificate or willingness to obtain one. A consultant will support you throughout the placement.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting children or young people, ideally within an SEN or education setting.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with pupils while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Calm and understanding approach when faced with challenging behaviour or difficult situations.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • An enhanced DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, or willingness to complete a new enhanced DBS check.
  • Genuine commitment to safeguarding and supporting the wellbeing of pupils.
  • Dedicated consultant support during placement.
  • Local opportunities across schools in the area.
  • Career guidance to develop experience within education.

Responsibilities

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEN.
  • Helping pupils understand and complete classroom activities.
  • Encouraging positive communication, social interaction and independence.
  • Supporting pupils with emotional, behavioural or learning difficulties.
  • Following individual support strategies and guidance from teaching staff.
  • Helping create a safe and inclusive environment where pupils feel valued.
  • Sharing observations and updates with teachers and other staff.
