Job summary

Teach Now is seeking a SEN Teaching Assistant with strong Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) experience for a supportive secondary-school setting in Hertfordshire.

You will work with students whose communication needs may affect their confidence, social interaction, understanding of instructions or ability to access the curriculum. You will collaborate with teachers and the SEND team to implement strategies and support pupil development.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting children or young people with speech, language or communication needs.
  • Secondary-school or SEND experience is highly desirable.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication.
  • Knowledge of visual communication strategies (Makaton or similar is advantageous).

Responsibilities

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support for students with SLCN.
  • Reinforcing communication programmes and strategies used by the school.
  • Breaking down instructions and curriculum language into accessible steps.
  • Using visual supports, modelling and structured communication techniques.
  • Helping students build confidence when speaking and participating in lessons.
  • Recording progress and feeding back to SEN staff.
  • Supporting students across different curriculum subjects.
