Job summary

Prospero Teaching is seeking a SEN Teaching Assistant in Finchley, Barnet to support pupils with autism and early communication needs. You will help children understand routines, join classroom activities and develop independence.

You will work closely with the teacher and SENCO, turning individual targets into manageable steps within the school day, while maintaining a patient, supportive approach. This full-time, long-term temporary role runs Monday to Friday during term time.

Qualifications

  • Previous UK teaching assistant experience in an early years or primary setting.
  • Practical experience supporting autistic children and communication development.
  • A patient, observant approach and confidence following individual support plans.
  • Experience with PECS, Makaton or play-based interventions would be useful.
  • A relevant teaching assistant or early years qualification is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support in early years or primary learning activities.
  • Use visual timetables, now-and-next prompts and clear language consistently.
  • Support shared attention, turn-taking and communication through structured activities.
  • Help pupils manage transitions and sensory needs using agreed approaches.
  • Record progress and share observations that help staff adjust support.
