Job summary

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking a SEN Teaching Assistant for a full academic year in Whitehaven, Cumbria. You will support pupils with severe and complex learning needs, working 1:1 or in small groups to promote independence and communication.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Support pupils 1:1 or in small groups across structured learning and activities.

  • Implement individualized plans under guidance of teachers and SEN specialists.
  • Foster a calm, encouraging atmosphere and support positive behaviour strategies.
  • Track engagement and progress, provide feedback to SENCO and staff.

About the Role

Are you a compassionate, resilient, and dedicated individual with a strong passion for Special Educational Needs (SEN)? Tradewind Recruitment is proud to partner with a renowned, purpose‑built SEN specialist school in Whitehaven to recruit a SEN Teaching Assistant for the complete 2026/2027 academic year. This role involves supporting children and young people who have severe, profound, and complex learning difficulties, sensory needs, or physical disabilities. Working as part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you will help create a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment where pupils can build independence, communication skills, and reach their personal achievements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 or small group basis across structured learning, creative activities, and social times.
  • Assisting with sensory development, communication programmes (such as PECS or Makaton), and personal care needs where required.
  • Implementing tailored individual education and healthcare plans under the guidance of class teachers and SEN specialists.
  • Helping foster a calm, encouraging atmosphere and supporting positive behaviour strategies.
  • Tracking student engagement and progress to provide valuable feedback to the SENCO and teaching staff.
What We Are Looking For
  • Prior experience supporting children, young adults, or vulnerable individuals with SEN or complex needs (in school, care, or support settings).
  • A patient, empathetic, and adaptable nature with strong emotional resilience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness to assist with personal care and physical support routines if needed.
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to process one).
