Job summary

SEMH Teaching Assistants needed in Stechford

Are you passionate about making a genuine difference in the lives of young people with additional needs? We are looking for compassionate, resilient and dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistants to support primary and secondary-aged pupils with a range of complex needs, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, Autism, learning disabilities, communication difficulties and behavioural needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a supportive specialist setting in Stechford, east Birmingham, where staff work closely with pupils to support their educational, emotional, social and personal development. The setting provides a nurturing and structured environment where pupils are supported to build confidence, develop independence and overcome barriers to learning.

The role will suit someone who is patient, adaptable and able to build strong relationships with young people who may communicate or respond to the world around them in different ways. Staff will be expected to provide a combination of educational, pastoral and practical support, with some pupils also requiring assistance with personal care and daily living skills.

About the Role:

• Provide individualised support to primary and secondary-aged pupils with SEMH, ASD, learning disabilities, communication difficulties and behavioural needs.
• Support pupils both within the classroom and through targeted interventions, adapting approaches to meet individual learning and communication needs.
• Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, helping them to develop confidence, communication, emotional regulation and independence.
• Support pupils with behaviours that may present as barriers to learning, using consistent and positive approaches.
• Assist pupils with personal care and daily living needs where required, maintaining dignity, respect and safeguarding at all times.
• Support pupils with communication difficulties, helping them to express their needs and engage positively with others.
• Encourage the development of social skills, independence and life skills alongside academic learning.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff and other professionals to provide consistent support and promote positive outcomes.
• Help create a calm, structured and inclusive learning environment where every pupil is supported to make progress.
• Recognise and celebrate individual progress, understanding that small steps can represent significant achievements for some pupils.

Requirements:

• Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH, ASD, learning disabilities, communication difficulties or behavioural needs.
• A calm, patient and empathetic approach, with the ability to remain consistent when supporting distressed or challenging behaviour.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with pupils who may have complex or additional needs.
• Willingness to support pupils with personal care and daily living activities where required.
• A proactive, flexible and nurturing approach, with a genuine commitment to supporting vulnerable young people.
• The ability to work effectively as part of a wider school and support team.

Desirable:

• Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, health and social care, psychology or SEND (e.g. Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, CACHE or similar).
• Experience working within SEN, specialist education, alternative provision, residential care or other specialist settings.
• Understanding of Autism, communication needs, sensory processing, emotional regulation and positive behaviour support.
• Experience using or supporting alternative communication methods, such as PECS, Makaton or visual communication systems.
• Previous experience providing personal care or supporting young people with daily living needs.
