Job summary

Protocol Education is recruiting a compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs at a specialist provision in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. You’ll work 1:1 or in small groups, de-escalate when needed, and help pupils re-engage with education at their own pace.

Experience with SEMH/SEND or challenging behaviour is preferred. A DBS check is required or in process. This temporary role offers ongoing opportunities.

Qualifications

• Experience with SEMH, SEND or challenging behaviour in a school or alternative setting.
• Ability to remain calm and patient in high-pressure situations.
• Genuine passion for supporting young people in education.

Responsibilities

• Support pupils with SEMH needs 1:1 or in small groups.
• Help pupils manage emotions, de-escalate situations and refocus.
• Collaborate with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals.
• Be a consistent, calm and reliable presence throughout the day.

Protocol Education is working with a specialist SEMH provision in Northallerton, looking for a confident and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join their team.

What your day could look like:

• Supporting pupils with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs
• Helping students manage emotions, de-escalate situations, and refocus
• Working 1:1 or in small groups to support both learning and wellbeing
• Collaborating with teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals
• Acting as a consistent, calm, and reliable presence throughout the day

• Has experience with SEMH, SEND, or challenging behaviour (school or alternative settings)
• Remains calm and patient, even in high-pressure situations
• Can build strong, positive relationships with pupils
• Has resilience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting young people
