Job summary

PK Education is seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Newcastle from September. You will support pupils with SEMH needs, helping with emotional regulation, confidence and engagement in learning.

Working alongside the class teacher and school team, you will help create a safe, positive and inclusive learning environment where children feel supported and able to thrive. Previous school/childcare experience is beneficial.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in school childcare or related setting.
  • Experience supporting SEMH/SEND is desirable.
  • Patient, nurturing approach and ability to build trusting relationships with children.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to pupils on a 1:1 and small group basis within the primary classroom.
  • Help pupils develop emotional regulation, confidence and independence.
  • Support pupils with SEMH needs and associated challenging behaviours.
  • Build strong, positive relationships with children.
  • Encourage engagement with learning and classroom activities.
  • Work with teachers to implement individual strategies and provide consistent behaviour management.

Job description

PK Education are currently recruiting for a dedicated and enthusiastic SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in the Newcastle area from September.

This is an excellent opportunity for a caring and resilient individual who is passionate about supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The successful candidate will provide support to pupils who may require additional help with emotional regulation, behaviour, confidence, and engagement with learning.

Working closely with the class teacher and wider school team, you will play a key role in creating a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment where children feel supported and able to thrive.

The role will include:
  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 and small group basis within the primary classroom
  • Helping children develop emotional regulation, confidence, and independence
  • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs and associated challenging behaviours
  • Building strong, positive relationships with children
  • Encouraging engagement with learning and classroom activities
  • Working alongside teachers and support staff to implement individual strategies
  • Providing a calm and consistent approach to behaviour management
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Previous experience working with children in a school, childcare, youth work, or support setting
  • Experience supporting children with SEMH, SEND, or behavioural needs (desirable)
  • A patient, nurturing, and understanding approach
  • The ability to build trusting relationships with young people
  • Confidence supporting children who may display challenging behaviour
  • A genuine passion for helping children achieve their potential
