Job summary

Cover People are seeking an SEMH Learning Support Assistant in Chesterfield to support students with social, emotional and mental health needs. The role runs full-time, Monday to Friday, starting September 2026, with a daily pay rate of £95–£110 DOE.

You will work in a specialist provision, delivering tailored interventions and building strong relationships to help students re-engage with education and develop key skills for future success.

Responsibilities

SEMH Learning Support Assistant

Cover People are recruiting an SEMH Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist alternative provision in Chesterfield. This rewarding role involves supporting students who require additional emotional, behavioural and academic support, helping them to re-engage with education and develop the skills needed for future success.

The provision offers a personalised and nurturing approach, with a strong focus on wellbeing, positive relationships and tailored learning pathways. Staff work closely together to ensure every student receives the support they need to make meaningful progress.

The Role:
  • Support students with SEMH needs in lessons and intervention sessions.
  • Build positive relationships that encourage engagement, confidence and progress.
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support tailored to individual needs.
  • Assist with behaviour management using restorative and positive behaviour approaches.
  • Support students in developing emotional regulation, resilience and social skills.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams and external agencies to support student outcomes.
The Ideal Candidate:
  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEND or behavioural needs.
  • A calm, patient and resilient approach.
  • Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
  • Confidence supporting students who may present challenging behaviour.
  • A genuine passion for helping young people succeed.
