Job summary

Protocol Education is recruiting an SEMH & Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant for a specialist SEMH school in Gateshead, starting September 2026. The role is full-time during term time, 8:30am–4:30pm, with pay of £98–£120 per day dependent on experience.

You will support pupils with SEMH needs, build relationships and help pupils re-engage with learning. Ideal candidates are calm, patient and emotionally intelligent, able to set boundaries and communicate positively.

Qualifications

• Calm and confident when faced with challenging behaviour.
• Patient, resilient and emotionally intelligent.
• Naturally good at building relationships with young people.
• Able to remain professional and maintain boundaries.
• Previous SEMH/PRU experience would be beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils.
• Support pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs.
• Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils.
• Help pupils regulate their emotions and develop regulation strategies.
• Identify triggers and support pupils to manage difficult situations.
• Use positive and consistent behaviour strategies.
• Encourage pupils to engage with their learning.
• Maintain clear, consistent boundaries.
• Support the class teacher with day-to-day activities.
• Help pupils develop confidence, independence and resilience.
• Encourage positive communication and social interaction.
• Celebrate progress, no matter how small.
