Job summary

King Edward VI Academy in Spilsby is seeking a dedicated Science Technician to support a team of four science teachers in a purpose-built science block. You will prepare materials, chemicals, specimens and supervise equipment to help deliver engaging practical lessons.

The role requires good GCSEs, science qualifications, and a commitment to safety and organisation. You will work 37 hours per week across 39 weeks, with term-time pattern and potential for professional development within our

Responsibilities

• Prepare materials for practical lessons in science.
• Prepare chemical solutions and biological specimens.
• Set up, test and prepare equipment following safety requirements.
• Assist in delivering additional learning activities as planned by teaching staff.
• Supervise and guide others in equipment operation within safety standards.
• Maintain order and safe working conditions in science areas.
• Monitor risk assessments for experiments.
• Maintain stock checks and keep CLEAPSS records.
• Label and store hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials.
• Check equipment before use and undertake minor repairs when possible.
• Consult with Subject Leader and Senior Technician as needed.

About the role

You will be supporting a team of 4 Science teachers, with 2 science preparation rooms in a dedicated science block.

• Preparation of materials for practical lessons within the department
• Preparation of chemical solutions, biological specimens etc.
• Supervise the set-up, test and preparation of apparatus, equipment, machinery, chemicals and/or materials following statutory health and safety requirements to support specific learning requirements within the delivery of the curriculum
• Assist or participate in the delivery of a wider, more demanding or specialist range of learning activities, as specified and planned by teaching staff, to maintain the required standards of curriculum delivery
• Supervise and guide others (including non-specialist teachers) in the operation of all equipment/machinery in the subject area, ensuring that operation is within statutory health and safety standards to fulfil the required standards of service delivery.
• Maintenance of good order and safe working conditions in these areas
• Monitoring risk assessments for experiments and practical lessons
• Maintain stock check, H&S requirements including CLEAPSS
• Storing and labelling properly any hazardous chemicals, radioactive materials etc.
• Checking equipment before use when possible
• Making minor repairs, where possible, and consulting with Subject Leader and Senior Technician

Permanent, Full Time 37 hrs per week / 39 weeks per year (08:00 to 16:00 with a 30 min unpaid lunch.)

The academy is currently attracting students from a wide catchment area from Skegness, the surrounding area and as far as Boston, Alford and Louth.
