Job summary

St Mary’s & St Peter’s CofE Primary School in England is seeking a reliable on-site Porter to help maintain the school and preschool premises, grounds and surrounding areas to a high standard of repair and cleanliness. You will carry out first line repairs, secure the site and supervise contractors as required.

The role includes porterage tasks, cleaning supervision, managing deliveries, assisting in after-school lettings, and occasional lunch duties.

Responsibilities

• To maintain the School and Pre School, including the surrounding grounds at a satisfactory level of repair and cleanliness, carrying out first line / minor repairs as required.
• To ensure the general security of the site, premises and grounds.
• To undertake general porterage duties.
• To co‑ordinate the use of after school activities, including lettings.
• To ensure the effective working of the school at a basic services level with regard to the specification of contract cleaning services.
• To ensure any contractors on site are signed in, identification inspected and safeguarding procedures adhered to.
• To cover ½ hour lunch duty.
• Ensuring that premises are secured at all times and managing access to school premises for out of hours activities.
• Taking responsibility for providing emergency access to the school at all times, liaising with the emergency services and with regard to safety regulations.
• Be the first port of call for school when the alarms sound. Overtime available.
• Monitoring the performance and standard of cleaning performed by contract cleaners with regard to the cleaning specification and instructions from the headteacher.
• Undertaking necessary cleaning tasks as required.
• To carry out minor repairs and maintenance within the scope of a competent person.
• Taking remedial action through a third party supplier when necessary.
• Ensure that all building interiors are kept well maintained, fit for purpose and secure, to best value principles.
• Directly providing first line of support in the following areas
• Emptying waste bins & keeping playgrounds / paths / external areas clear and safe.
• Managing stock of essential maintenance items, such as fluorescent tubes, light bulbs and installing, when necessary
• Regularly inspecting Health & Safety equipment to ensure that it is maintained in safe working order.
• Ensuring all alarms, fire extinguishers etc are serviced and in a good working order.
• Ensuring that all drains, gullies and gutters are clear and free of rubbish.
• Seasonal maintenance e.g. removal of leaves / ice
• Moving furniture and equipment around school premises as requested.
• Setting up chairs, stage, lighting etc for school assemblies and performances.
• Ensure manual handling tasks for the school are undertaken including distribution of parcels and other goods.
• Ensuring that the services for gas, water and electricity and telecommunications are maintained to offer an acceptable basic level of provision.
• Liaising with service providers, as appropriate to ensure the provision.
• Work with others on energy efficiency improvements and measures to reduce the school’s energy utilisation.
• Carrying out and reporting water checks in conjunction with the school’s Legionella Written Scheme of work.
• Unlock and lock the school buildings as required, carrying out a daily school inspection safety checklist ensuring that any irregularities are reported, investigated and appropriate action taken.
• Assist in the day to day maintenance of the school premises.
• Taking deliveries of milk and fruit and distributing as required.
• Maintain good working relationships with all school staff, ensuring that maintenance issues raised by staff are resolved quickly and the corrective action undertaken is communicated back to the person who initiated the request.
• Work to Health and Safety standard at all times including: use of hand and power tools, working at height, electrical safety, hot work etc.
• Ensure that all maintenance logs are completed in a full and timely manner.
• Contribute to raising standards.
• Participate in meetings at the school which relate to the organisation of the school site.
• Any other duties as required.
• Assist in the cleaning of areas outside of the school cleaning contract.
• Play a full part in the life of the school community, support its aims and ethos as a Church of England School and encouraging staff and students to follow this example.
• Promote the school’s policies, comply with the school’s Health and Safety policy and undertake risk assessments as appropriate.
• Set a good example to all students in their presentation and their personal conduct.
• Evaluate their performance and use this to improve their effectiveness.
• Establish effective working relationships with colleagues.
