Job summary

Smestow Academy in Wolverhampton is seeking a reliable Facilities Operative to help keep the school safe, clean and welcoming for pupils, staff, and visitors. You will work with the Senior Site Supervisor to maintain the premises to a high standard.

The role includes day-to-day repairs, security duties, cleaning, grounds work, and event setup. Starting salary £24,753, 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday, all year round, with shift pattern work, commencing September 2026.

Qualifications

• Flexibility to support school events and respond to emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Maintenance: Carry out day-to-day repairs, decoration, improvement works, and support statutory compliance checks (e.g. fire safety, legionella).
• Security: Open and close the school at set times, ensure site security, and respond to alarm callouts when necessary.
• Cleaning & Presentation: Keep outdoor areas, pathways, playgrounds, and fields clean and safe; support with waste collection, toilet supplies, dining room cleanliness, and removal of graffiti/chewing gum.
• Grounds & Vehicles: Assist with general grounds maintenance and support with school vehicle checks, refuelling, and occasional minibus driving (training provided).
• Logistics (Portage): Receive deliveries, move and set up equipment for events/exams, manage waste disposal, and assist visitors/contractors.
• Window Cleaning: Undertake certain window cleaning tasks within safety guidelines.
