Smile Education are currently recruiting for an experienced Design Technician to join a welcoming secondary school in the B8 area, with an immediate start available. The role supports the Design & Technology department, helping to ensure lessons run smoothly and students have access to resources and equipment.

The successful candidate will prepare materials and equipment for lessons, maintain workshops, support teaching staff, and uphold health and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a Design Technician, DT Technician or similar practical role.
  • Experience in an educational setting is advantageous.
  • Strong practical understanding of Design & Technology.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare materials and equipment for practical lessons.
  • Maintain and organise workshops and learning spaces.
  • Support teachers with classroom and workshop activities.
  • Ensure health and safety procedures are followed at all times.
  • Carry out basic maintenance and repairs where appropriate.
  • Order and source materials and equipment when required.
  • Assist students with practical activities and projects.

Smile Education are currently recruiting for an experienced Design Technician to join a welcoming and supportive secondary school in the B8 area, with an immediate start available.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a practical, creative and organised individual with experience working within a school, college or design and technology environment. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting the Design & Technology department, helping to ensure lessons run smoothly and students have access to the resources and equipment they need.

The successful applicant will be responsible for preparing materials and equipment for lessons, maintaining workshops and practical areas, supporting teaching staff and ensuring that health and safety procedures are followed at all times.

The role would suit someone with a background in Design Technology, Engineering, Product Design, Construction or a similar practical subject, who is confident working with a range of tools, machinery and materials.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a dedicated and supportive school team. The expected salary range for the role is£16 - £18 per hour, depending on experience.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Preparing and organising materials, tools and equipment for practical lessons
  • Supporting Design & Technology teachers with classroom and workshop activities
  • Maintaining and organising workshops, classrooms and practical learning spaces
  • Ensuring tools, machinery and equipment are safe and ready for use
  • Carrying out basic maintenance and repairs where appropriate
  • Managing and maintaining stock levels of materials and resources
  • Ordering and sourcing materials and equipment when required
  • Supporting students with practical activities and projects
  • Ensuring health and safety procedures are followed at all timesCarrying out appropriate checks on workshop equipment and machinery
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working environment
  • Supporting the smooth day‑to‑day running of the Design & Technology department
  • Liaising professionally with teaching staff and school support teams
  • Assisting with displays, student projects and departmental activities where required
The Ideal Candidate Will
  • Have previous experience working as a Design Technician, DT Technician or within a similar practical role
  • Ideally have experience working within a school, college or educational setting
  • Have a strong practical understanding of Design & Technology
  • Be confident using a range of tools, machinery and workshop equipment
  • Have excellent organisational and time‑management skills
  • Have a strong understanding of health and safety procedures
  • Be proactive, reliable and able to work independently
  • Be confident supporting both staff and students
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be able to build positive working relationships with teachers and students
  • Have a genuine interest in supporting young people and their practical education
What to Expect from Applicants

We are looking for applicants with previous experience in a Design Technology, Engineering, Product Design, Construction or similar practical environment.

Experience working within an educational setting would be highly advantageous, although candidates with strong relevant industry experience may also be considered.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a strong understanding of workshop safety and be confident working with tools, machinery, materials and practical equipment.
