We are now seeking an experienced, quality-driven Contracts Manager to help us lead and maintain our projects across the South Coast Candidate would ideally be located around the Portsmouth area and be available to travel to the London area as required.

Purpose of the Role

The Contracts Manager is responsible for driving operational efficiency, ensuring innovative health and safety practices, and maintaining SHL’s standards across all projects. Reporting directly to the Operations Director, you will build and retain high-performing teams, ensure project delivery excellence, and maintain strong client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Management

  • Lead and manage scaffolding contracts from tender award through to completion and final account.
  • Develop project execution plans, method statements, risk assessments, and timelines.
  • Allocate work based on program needs and budgeted labour targets.
  • Ensure all projects are completed on time, within budget, and to SHL’s quality standards.
  • Monitor handover procedures and maintain project documentation via IMS and other systems.
  • Prepare and issue scaffold design briefs for our third-party designers.

2. Client Relations

  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, addressing queries and maintaining satisfaction.
  • Attend client meetings, site inspections, and progress meetings.
  • Identify business growth opportunities through strong client relationships.

3. Health, Safety, and Compliance

  • Promote a culture of safety, maintaining high standards of housekeeping and compliance (e.g., NASC TG20, SG4 standards).
  • Conduct regular site audits, toolbox talks, and site inspections.
  • Investigate health and safety incidents in collaboration with the HSE team.
  • Ensure scaffold engineering designs and method statements are followed.
  • Support mental health and wellbeing initiatives across teams.

4. Commercial and Financial Management

  • Monitor financial performance, controlling costs and managing variations.
  • Prepare and submit valuations, applications for payment, and final accounts.
  • Learn to price variations prior to valuation dates.
  • Ensure additional works are instructed and documented correctly.
  • Assist with commercial settlements and safeguard SHL’s interests.

5. Team Leadership and People Development

  • Manage Project Managers, supervisors, chargehands, and scaffolders, promoting a high-morale environment.
  • Mentor and develop Project Managers and Supervisors to deliver effective site management.
  • Review and update wage structures aligned with industry benchmarks and staff performance.
  • Source, recruit, and onboard scaffolding staff and supervisors as required.
  • Identify training needs and liaise with People Operations to ensure all certifications are current.
  • Maintain an open leadership style that encourages psychological safety and positive communication.

6. Resource and Logistics Management

  • Organise daily labour and logistics, updating the work schedule accordingly.
  • Oversee material deliveries and scaffold stock management across all sites.
  • Maintain close coordination with the Yard/Procurement teams for project needs.

7. Reporting and Administration

  • Provide regular project updates and reports to senior management.
  • Track and report project KPIs.
  • Conduct regular quality checks on site documentation, ensuring compliance with internal standards and client expectations.

8. General Duties

  • Attend weekly/monthly internal meetings.
  • Assist with business development initiatives.
  • Provide management cover during holidays and sickness.
  • Take responsibility for personal development aligned with agreed annual objectives.

  • Excellent planning, organisational, and strategic thinking abilities.
  • High-level communication skills, adaptable to different audiences.
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of business objectives.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a drive for continuous improvement.
  • Confident in managing conflict and holding difficult conversations.

Essential Qualifications:

  • CISRS Scaffold Supervisor Card (minimum);
  • (Advanced Scaffolder Card and/or CISRS Manager Card highly desirable)
  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) Certification
  • First Aid at Work Certification
  • Temporary Works Supervisor or Coordinator Qualification (desirable)
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in scaffolding project management or contract management.
  • Strong knowledge of scaffolding standards and regulations (e.g., NASC TG20, SG4).
  • Experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously in construction, industrial, or commercial sectors.
  • Proven ability to manage project financials — valuations, variations, and final accounts.
  • Solid experience leading operational teams: supervisors, scaffolders, chargehands.
  • Experience preparing and managing scaffold design briefs.
  • Proven track record in maintaining high health and safety standards.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Commercial and contract management awareness.
  • Excellent planning, organisation, and time management.
  • Confident communicator — written and verbal — at all business levels.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and scaffold designs.
  • IT literate (Microsoft Office, project management tools, IMS systems).
  • IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate.
  • Scaffold Inspection Qualification (CISRS Basic or Advanced).
  • Knowledge of pricing, estimating, and tendering processes.
  • Experience sourcing and managing labour and subcontractors.
