Job summary

Government Recruitment Service is seeking a Salmonella Technical Officer in Nottingham to support APHA activities. This fixed-term role involves auditing, training, and oversight of Defra-approved laboratories across the UK.

You will work on Salmonella strategy delivery, liaising with DALs, UKAS, and APHA teams, and contribute to quality assurance across multiple sites. The position ends 31 March 2028 with a salary of £35,895 per year.

Responsibilities

• Provide external and internal auditing, training, and advisory services for APHA and DALs at multiple locations across the UK.
• Plan and conduct auditing to monitor compliance with Defra and APHA procedures for approved laboratories, relevant International Standards and to facilitate improvements in business processes.
• Provide oversight of the performance of Defra-approved Salmonella testing laboratories, primarily those testing National Control Programme (NCP) samples under CSPO, but also those testing Poultry Health Scheme (PHS) samples under TARP.
• Liaise with disease and test consultants, UKAS, proficiency testing team, APHA One Health and DALs teams to appraise laboratory applications for approval.
• Provide audits and reports of laboratories applying for Defra approval and in cases of performance issues.
• Collate and analyse approved laboratory test data including commentary on participant performance in VETQAS proficiency testing.
• Coordinate annual ring trials for approved laboratories using a challenging faecal matrix with low Salmonella levels.
• Act as APHA representative liaising with UKAS and APHA Quality/ISO17025 teams regarding DAL Salmonella quality assurance procedures and DAL inspection programmes.
