Job summary

The Animal & Plant Health Agency’s Bacteriology Department in the UK is seeking an experienced microbiologist to support Salmonella testing oversight, audits, and quality assurance across DAL labs and the National Reference Laboratory. You will deliver training, reports, and expert appraisal of applications for Defra-approved laboratory status, with travel to external sites as required.

Qualifications

• Experience auditing laboratories to Defra/APHA procedures and ISO standards.
• Ability to train and advise staff and DALs across multiple sites.
• Experience with quality assurance data and proficiency testing schemes.

Responsibilities

• Provide external/internal auditing and training across multiple UK locations.
• Oversee performance of Defra-approved Salmonella testing laboratories.
• Liaise with UKAS, proficiency testing teams and DALs for laboratory approvals.
• Produce audits reports and quality assurance documentation.
• Contribute to annual proficiency trials and QA initiatives across the DAL network.
• Keep up-to-date with ISO17025, ISO9001 and ISO17043 standards.
