National Grid is hiring a Safety Manager on a permanent basis. The location will be based from our Warwick office - Hybrid Working PolicyJob PurposeJoin our Group Safety, Health and Wellbeing team at National Grid, where you will play a critical role in shaping the safety strategy for over 30,000 employees. As the Safety Manager, you will be instrumental in developing and leading the implementation of comprehensive Group-wide safety governance standards, policies, and assurance frameworks.
In this dynamic corporate role, you will ensure that all business units not only meet their safety obligations and compliance requirements but also excel in managing their own safety programmes. Your expertise will be crucial in fostering a culture of safety excellence across the organisation, driving continuous improvement, and safeguarding the wellbeing of our workforce during the largest overhaul of our electricity grid in generations.
You will support the Group Safety Manager and collaborate with US counterparts ensuring compliance with both UK and US regulations and industry best practices. As a key subject matter expert, you will provide strategic guidance and technical support to safety teams across diverse business units, fostering a robust safety culture and instilling accountability within Business Units and Functions.
What you'll do- Trusted Advisor: Act as a trusted advisor to business unit safety teams, ensuring that governance frameworks effectively support local safety management efforts.
- Knowledge Development: Create and disseminate guidance materials and best practice frameworks to enhance safety programmes and facilitate knowledge sharing across all business units.
- Data-Driven Insights: Track leading and lagging safety indicators, leveraging data insights to drive continuous improvement and informed decision-making.
- Group Reporting: Producing comprehensive group safety performance reports and strategic briefing papers to inform and secure support from the Group Executive and Board.
- Oversight and Assurance: Lead the oversight of business unit safety programmes, conducting thorough audits and inspections to monitor compliance and recommend strategic improvements.
- Safety Management System: Oversee the Group’s Safety Management System (SMS) and design comprehensive safety training frameworks to ensure competency among safety professionals and operational teams.
- Incident Investigation Leadership: Provide oversight on significant incident investigations and support the implementation of lessons learned frameworks across the Group.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the key interface between Group Safety and business unit teams, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with HR, Risk, ESG, and Operations.
- Industry Representation: Represent the organisation in industry groups and regulatory discussions, collaborating with external partners to ensure compliance and drive continuous improvement in safety standards.
About you- Proven Leadership: Demonstrated ability to foster collective ownership of safety management and drive strategic decision-making for the benefit of the business.
- Exceptional Writing Skills: Strong technical and business writing skills, with a talent for conveying key messages through clear and concise reports.
- Effective Communicator: Excellent verbal communication, relationship management, and negotiation skills, facilitating effective collaboration across the organisation.
- Safety Governance Expertise: Experience in developing and implementing safety governance frameworks, policies, and assurance processes at a Group level.
- Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of UK safety regulations (e.g., HSE, PUWER, LOLER, CDM, RIDDOR) and ISO 45001, with expertise in safety management system development.
- Analytical Skills: Strong analytical capabilities for safety data analysis and performance reporting, utilising both leading and lagging indicators for effective risk management.
- Training Development: Demonstrated experience in designing and delivering safety training programmes to enhance competency across all levels of the organisation.
- Audit and Compliance: Experience in leading safety audits, assurance processes, and compliance monitoring across multiple business units.
- Influential Engagement: Ability to engage and influence business unit safety managers, ensuring effective knowledge sharing and alignment with governance.
- Industry Background: A background in regulated industries or high-risk operational environments is essential, with knowledge of US safety legislation considered advantageous.
- Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with electrical engineering principles and processes would be beneficial.
- Safety Technology Familiarity: Knowledge of safety technology implementation, such as AI-driven risk assessments or predictive safety analytics, is a plus.
What you'll getA competitive salary circa £62,000 - £72,000 - dependent on capability
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 12% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
