Job summary

VAC 541 Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Manager (SHEQ Manager)

Industry: Waste/Recycling

Salary: Up to £55,000 basic, dependant on experience.

Location: Ideally based in Manchester with travel to other local depots.

Our client, a well-established waste management and recycling company in Manchester with over 20 years of experience, is seeking a SHEQ Manager. The company operates commercial waste collection and disposal services across Lancashire, Manchester, Merseyside, and East Cheshire, with over a million collections in the NW, a modern MRF facility, a fleet of 30+ trucks, and over 100 employees.

Role Overview

Establish, maintain, and enforce systems that deliver safety, environmental, and quality standards. Promote a strong safety culture by enforcing policies and acting as required. This is a full-time, on-site role based on the outskirts of Manchester, with travel to other depots. You need to be a hands-on leader comfortable working both in the office and on-site.

Responsibilities
  1. Manage the ISO accreditations for the company.
  2. Create monthly management reports and quarterly board reports.
  3. Ensure full SHEQ compliance through audits and inspections.
  4. Lead annual management review meetings.
  5. Develop action plans to improve safety across the MRF and transport operations.
  6. Manage supply chain documentation and compliance vetting.
  7. Act as the Construction (Design and Management - CDM) point of contact for construction and maintenance activities.
  8. Attend customer sites to ensure safety standards are met.
  9. Monitor environmental performance, focusing on noise, dust, and water courses.
  10. Ensure waste carriers and destination sites are properly permitted and permits are on file.
  11. Manage and maintain SHEQ accreditations.
  12. Deliver routine toolbox talks.
  13. Ensure compliance with fire risk assessments, LOLERS, PSSR inspections, PAT testing, and boiler inspections across sites.
Experience & Qualifications

Essential Experience:

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a front-line HSE role within waste, manufacturing, or logistics.
  • Experience developing and implementing safety and quality programs.
  • Proven experience in risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Ability to produce management and board reports.

Essential Qualifications:

  • TECH IOSH or higher
  • NEBOSH Certificate
  • Knowledge of ISO standards

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Waste industry knowledge and/or logistics and fleet experience.
  • Understanding of H&S legislation.
  • Experience with ISO standards.
  • Strong knowledge of safety, health, environment, and quality management systems.
