Job overview

The Senior Biomedical Scientist / Clinical Andrologist shares responsibility for the operation of the Andrology laboratory and supervises biomedical scientists, clinical scientists, associate practitioners, and biomedical support workers. The post-holder ensures the timely processing of workload, manages stock control and assets, and deputizes for the Chief Biomedical Scientist. The Quality Manager develops and applies a quality management system within the Laboratory, in accordance with ISO 15189, and deputizes for the Reproductive Science Quality Manager (ISO 17043). The role involves applying scientific knowledge and providing high-quality diagnostic services directly impacting patient care.

Main duties of the job

The duties include (but are not limited to):

  1. Ensuring compliance with national and international standards and legislation, including ISO 15189 and ISO 17043.
  2. Acting within the policies and standard operating procedures of the laboratory.
  3. Defining operating procedures in collaboration with staff.
  4. Undertaking Clinical Andrology activities.
  5. Supporting HR and management activities within Andrology.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Registration with the HCPC as a Biomedical or Clinical Scientist.
  • MSc or equivalent qualification.
  • Quality management qualification or equivalent experience.
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in Andrology or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a medical laboratory, specifically in Andrology/Cellular Science.
  • Experience in staff management and leadership.
  • Proficiency with laboratory equipment such as microscopes, pipettes, and air flow cabinets.
  • Knowledge of BS EN ISO 15189, ISO 17043, audit, and QMS.
  • Ongoing CPD evidence.
  • Experience with all Andrology technical procedures and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of infertility treatments.
  • Level 1 & 2 counselling skills.
  • Ability to counsel and obtain consent from patients in sensitive situations.
