Job summary

Freight Personnel in Manchester is seeking a Road Freight Operator to manage international and domestic road freight shipments from quotation to invoicing. You will coordinate loads, source hauliers and oversee documentation, ensuring on-time delivery and strong client relationships.

Ideal candidates will have SME freight forwarder exposure, and a proactive, detail‑oriented approach to solving problems in a small team.

Qualifications

• Proven experience managing international road freight shipments from quotation through to invoicing.
• Background working for an SME freight forwarder with broad operational responsibility.
• Capacity to build and manage a department in a small team.
• Practical knowledge of road freight documentation, customs procedures and Incoterms.
• Confidence sourcing hauliers, negotiating rates and managing supplier relationships.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Excellent organisation, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple shipments independently.
• A proactive, practical approach to solving problems in a small team environment.

Responsibilities

• Manage Domestic & international road freight shipments from start to finish, keeping customers informed throughout.
• Prepare accurate quotations, negotiate rates and secure bookings.
• Coordinate full loads, part loads and groupage shipments, arranging collections and deliveries.
• Source and book reliable hauliers, checking availability, transit times and service requirements.
• Prepare and check transport and commercial documentation, including CMR consignment notes.
• Handle customs declarations and clearance arrangements, liaising with customs agents where required.
• Track shipments, monitor delivery schedules and obtain proof of delivery.
• Resolve delays, issues and documentation discrepancies promptly.
• Build and maintain client relationships, understand their requirements and identify opportunities for repeat business.
• Develop strong working relationships with hauliers, suppliers, overseas agents and partners.
• Check supplier charges, raise customer invoices and monitor shipment profitability.
• Maintain accurate shipment records and support colleagues across the business.
