Job description

Who are we?

GWR is the proud custodian of Brunel's railway - one of the most prestigious networks in the world. We have some of the newest trains in the country and exciting plans to extend our services. With more than one hundred million passenger journeys each year, we carry people to over 275 stations in the South West, from Cornwall and South Wales to London, passing through beautiful countryside and top tourist destinations.

We are transforming the way people think about train travel, empowering our team of over 6,000 people from diverse backgrounds to deliver a great experience for our customers. Together, we aim to revalue rail as a relaxing, fast, efficient, and friendly mode of travel.

About the role:

The role involves ensuring train crew reach their destinations on time. It oversees positions including Drivers, Guards, and Catering Staff across the GWR network.

As part of our team, you will manage the resource desk operations on a 24/7 roster, collaborating with Train Service Delivery and Network Rail colleagues. Responsibilities include forward planning of services, implementing emergency plans, managing disruptions and recovery, supporting colleagues, and performing administrative tasks.

This dynamic, desk-based role requires the use of specialised railway software. Once shifts start, you will oversee crews in your assigned network area.

Are you suitable?
  • Are you genuinely interested in a demanding railway sector role?
  • Are you trustworthy and reliable?
  • Are you a great communicator?
  • Are you flexible and adaptable to changing demands?
  • Can you work independently and as part of a close team?
  • Do you have resilience to handle various situations under pressure?
  • Can you manage routine tasks while juggling multiple demands?
  • Are you eager to learn in a fast-paced environment with live desk training?
  • Are you committed to skill development and high standards?

If you answered "No" to any, consider if a control-based role suits your strengths. If "Yes" to all, we encourage you to apply.

Eligibility criteria:
  • Proactive with attention to detail
  • Good understanding of the GWR network
  • Ability to communicate safety-critical information by phone
  • Proficient in Office 365 (rail-specific IT training provided)
  • Professional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable transportation for commuting, as train services may not always be available
  • Willingness to work shifts up to 12 hours, including weekends and public holidays
The reward:

We offer a great team environment, comprehensive training, and benefits including ongoing development, a defined benefit pension, free rail travel for you and family, health care, discounts, and support services.
