Job summary

Balliol College, Oxford invites applications for the part-time Assistant Dean at the Graduate Centre – Holywell Manor. The appointment is for two terms from January 2027, with no defined hours, and requires on-site residence year-round.

Qualifications

• Engaged in active research or teaching in the University at a level beyond a doctorate.
• Appreciation of the welfare and disciplinary issues relevant within a student community.
• Experience of decanal and/or welfare roles in a higher education context.
• Sound judgment, including the ability to react quickly to sometimes challenging situations and to respond with tact and empathy to the range of student needs.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and gain the confidence of a wide range of people of diverse social and cultural backgrounds, including students and academic staff, College officers, and all grades of administrative and support staff.
• Excellent communication skills and command of the English language (oral and written), with an awareness of the sensitivity of communications appropriate to an international community.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and use discretion, including data protection considerations.
• Sympathy with the aims, objectives, and values of a Higher Education institution.
• Willingness to undertake training.

Responsibilities

• Maintaining a welcoming environment and good behaviour at the Graduate Centre, ensuring noise and disturbance stay within limits.
• Work with the Praefectus, Junior Deans and staff to resolve minor disciplinary matters informally.
• Escalate decanal matters to the Dean when necessary; assist in investigations on behalf of the Dean.
• Sign-post students to Welfare Team and relevant University resources for support.
• Assist in planning and supporting graduate events and liaising with College staff for safety and logistics.
• Liaise with on-site staff to address issues related to facilities, safety, and order in the Graduate Centre.
