Location: Liverpool

Benefits: 30 days holiday + Christmas closure

Duration: Fixed-term, full-time appointment until 31st May 2026

The Department of Clinical Sciences at LSTM is seeking to appoint a Laboratory Technician to support the work of the Liverpool Vaccine Group (LVG), a leader in the study of host-pathogen interactions, mucosal immunology, and vaccine development. This is a fixed-term position, offering an exciting opportunity to contribute to translational research focused on respiratory and other infectious diseases.

Working in a Good Clinical Practice (GCP)-compliant laboratory environment, you will be providing technical support to researchers investigating immune mechanisms related to susceptibility and protection against pathogens. You will be working as part of a collaborative team of technicians supporting lab operations, equipment maintenance, safety compliance, and sample processing.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Processing and storing a wide range of human clinical samples (e.g. serum, PBMCs, nasal washes, saliva, swabs, stools, urine, and biopsies)
• Supporting immunological and molecular assays, including ELISA, qPCR, flow cytometry, and DNA/RNA extractions
• Maintaining accurate records of laboratory procedures, sample logs, and results in accordance with GCP, HTA, and HSE standards
• Assisting in developing and optimising new laboratory techniques and contributing to SOPs, COSHH, and risk assessments
• Conducting microbiological analyses and supporting sample collection logistics with NHS collaborators
• Undertaking routine laboratory duties including equipment calibration, stock management, and ordering supplies in compliance with purchasing procedures
• Participating in audits, ensuring laboratory governance, and helping maintain a high-quality laboratory environment
• Providing logistical support for transporting samples between LSTM and local NHS sites

This role may involve some flexibility with working hours, including occasional evening or weekend work, to meet clinical and research timelines.

The successful candidate will possess:

• Experience working in a clinical or research laboratory environment
• Practical experience with human clinical samples and laboratory assays (molecular biology, immunology, or microbiology)
• Excellent understanding of laboratory safety, GCP principles, and record-keeping in a regulated setting
• Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet tight deadlines
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and proactive approach
• Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of your work

(For a full list of essential and desirable criteria, please refer to the job description and person specification.)

Additional benefits of joining LSTM:

• 30 days annual leave, plus bank holidays, plus Christmas closure days
• Generous occupational pension schemes
• Government-backed “cycle to work” scheme
• Affiliated, discounted staff membership to the University of Liverpool Sports Centre
• A range of additional family-friendly policies
