About The Role

The Research Communications Manager will develop and deliver a strategy to communicate engagingly about the research we fund to find treatments for hearing loss and tinnitus to a variety of audiences, including our staff, supporters and the public. Using their science communications expertise, they will develop an in-depth understanding of our research portfolio and support teams across the organisation to communicate about our research and its impact in creative ways to our supporters and the general public. As a key link between the research programme and marketing teams, they will create communications featuring inspiring, scientifically accurate stories to engage our audiences, both warm and cold, and build support for our research.

How This Role Contributes To RNID

This role is critical in increasing our presence as a charity that funds biomedical research into treatments for hearing loss and tinnitus and helping to expand our supporter base. They will be a crucial member of the Marketing and Communications Capability and work closely with the Research team.

About You

You’re a talented science communications professional, passionate about communicating research accessibly, and able to interpret complex information and communicate it in a simple, impactful and engaging way. You’ll have exceptional writing skills and be able to build strong relationships across the charity as well as with researchers and those personally affected by hearing loss or tinnitus. A strategic thinker, you’ll share our commitment to being evidence-based and focussed on the needs of the people we support. You’ll have excellent attention to detail and be keen to join an organisation looking to better showcase the research it’s funding, as we work to change the lives of everyone affected by hearing loss and tinnitus.

You will be responsible for:

  • Being the key link between the Research programme and external facing teams such as Marketing and Communications, and Fundraising
  • Developing an expert and up-to-date understanding of our research portfolio and grants programme and their impact
  • Developing strategic research communication plans that feature scientifically sound stories to demonstrate the impact of our work to a range of different audiences
  • Working with the Research team to produce engaging, tailored research communications to inform and inspire our supporter
  • Working across other teams in the charity to ensure that we produce engaging research communications content across all our channels, demonstrating the impact of our research to different audiences
  • Ensuring the scientific accuracy of internal and external communications around our research work

ESSENTIAL:

Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant science subject

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of translating complex scientific information into engaging content for the public and other lay audiences
  • Experience of effectively disseminating research communications to different audiences, using a variety of channels

Skills

  • Ability to research, interpret and present scientific information in accessible and meaningful ways
  • Ability to tailor scientific information to a variety of audiences
  • Excellent project management, written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent teamworking skills and the ability to balance the needs of all interested stakeholders in the production of content for internal and external communications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including confidence in working with senior colleagues and stakeholders and the ability to deal sensitively with members of the communities we support
  • Highly organised and able to manage and prioritise competing project deadlines

Knowledge

  • An understanding of medical research processes and principles
  • Interest and enthusiasm for keeping up to date with the charity’s scientific and support work as well as the external news landscape
