The Centre for Human & Applied Physiological Sciences (CHAPS) is part of the School of Basic & Medical Biosciences within the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine. Led by Professor Mathias Gautel, it comprises five departments with diverse expertise. The School aims to bridge fundamental biological research with clinical application, focusing on health and disease, and offers a rigorous academic program for students.
We are offering an opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team working on a Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital Charity funded study. The research investigates mechanisms, risk factors, and responses to treatment of Long COVID symptoms through a randomized controlled trial of a novel psychophysiological intervention called Balance-ACT.
The successful candidate will perform physiological outcome measures to assess fatigue, breathlessness, and physical activity in participants with Long COVID. These measures include lung function tests, exercise capacity tests, muscle strength and fatigability assessments, and heart rate variability analysis from ECG signals. Responsibilities include conducting physiological testing, data analysis, and assisting with participant recruitment and consent. Prior practical experience in human physiological testing is preferred, but comprehensive training will be provided.
You will join a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and scientists working across physical and mental health domains under the supervision of Dr Caroline Jolley and Dr Gerrard Rafferty. The work will be conducted at the Centre for Human and Applied Physiological Sciences laboratories in the King’s College Hospital Department of Respiratory Medicine, Denmark Hill campus. Collaboration with clinical colleagues across Long COVID services within King’s Health Partners and links to the Department of Psychological Medicine are integral to this role.
This is a full-time position (35 hours per week) on a fixed-term contract from 17 June 2025 to 31 December 2025.
