Job description

Relief Support Workers are a valued source of support to our teams and the people we support. As natural relationship-builders and problem-solvers, Relief Support Workers thrive on bringing out the best in others and making a meaningful difference with their time.A casual role with serious impact.

Who would be suited to the Relief Support Worker role?

Quite simply; all kinds of people.

Maybe you’re someone who’s enjoyed voluntary work.

Keen to build on this.

Maybe you have a natural affinity to those with disabilities.

Maybe you’ve never really spent any time with someone with a disability.

Maybe you have experiences, skills, stories, or interests to share.

Now searching for a new sense of purpose.

Maybe you’ve decided it’s time for a change of scenery.

A new direction.

A different crowd.

Maybe you’re out of work.

In training or education.

Maybe you’d like some novel experiences.

For a future career goal.

Or, just for the heck of it.

Maybe you’re a parent.

A grandparent.

With a few hours to give.

Between drop-offs and pick-ups.

A juggler.

With time to give.

If so, we’d love to hear from you.
What training or experience do I need to become a Relief Support Worker?

You don’t need to bring any specific experience to the role. We provide all the training required to become a Relief Support Worker. You just need to have a sense of our mission ‘empowering people to achieve a lifestyle they’re proud of’ and how you might ‘bring this to life’ in your own way for the people we support.

Green Light’s managers, many of whom started just like you, will check in on you. They’ll make sure you have the right induction, an opportunity to ‘buddy up’ and have 1:1 supervision to share your views and get feedback. We’ll provide ongoing support, so that you can become a confident and a valued member of our team and provide great support to people.

What shifts will be available?

Green Light now has established teams in (or close to) Helston, Camborne, Tehidy, Illogan, Redruth, Truro, Goonhavern, Perranporth, Holywell Bay, Newquay, Grampound Road and Foxhole where teams are supporting individuals on a 24/7 basis. Relief Support Workers can work across any number of these, or may decide to work in a home that is close to their own for ease of travel, as some may only be walking or cycling distance away. (see map for exact locations )

As a Relief Support Worker you can share your availability and preferences in advance with our managers who can then factor this into their planning and how your strengths, skills or interests might be best applied. You can also let us know if you are available unexpectedly or at short notice. E ven short windows of time can be helpful for our teams, as they help people plan their daily lives, for example:

  • A late morning to early afternoon shift (10:00 – 14:00) accompanying someone as they do their shopping or go out for lunch (your meal is provided too)
  • An evening shift (18:00 – 22:00) accompanying someone as they go to the pub for a game of pool.

Longer shifts are also available for those who prefer to ‘chunk’ their time together. For example, those who have time available at weekends or during school breaks.

What will a typical day look like?

People with learning disabilities and autism are as individual as the rest of us. So, the ‘no such thing as a typical day’ cliché stands. Your time with us will vary depending on the needs, interests and goals of each person you are assigned to support. As a member of the relief team, you may arrive just in time to accompany someone to an appointment, work, leisure or social activity or help them to prepare an evening meal. We are led by the individual needs and interests of the people we support.

The majority of people we support are healthy adults with no physical disabilities. Some may have certain health needs for which training and support is provided. Many are highly active or ‘outdoorsy’ with boundless energy. Quite happy on a climbing wall, a paddle board, or hiking trail. Others may be less athletic, more at home in their favourite cafe, leisure centre pool, or strolling around a boating lake. A minority may be reclusive, withdrawn or socially isolated, needing skilled support provided gradually so they are able to develop coping skills. Easy wins for some will be hard-earned wins for others. A successful day will look very different depending on which team you happen to be supporting as a member of our relief team.

In time, successful Relief Team members develop strong relationships with certain teams and the individuals supported by those teams and become a trusted person to call upon, adding to the overall strength of that team.

The key appeal for many Relief Support Workers is the variety and flexibility offered by the role whilst still doing something meaningful with the time you are able to commit. On top of this, we can provide:

  • Competitive rates of pay – £14.60 per hour for Saturdays and Sundays £12.60 per hour on weekdays.
  • Quality training and induction programme – not just a tick box exercise – we want our employees to really understand their role in providing great care and support
  • Sleep-ins at £60
  • 28 days annual leave (pro- rata)
  • Company Pension scheme
  • Free meals and activities at work – we believe people should enjoy meals together and share experiences with one another
  • Access to the Blue Light Card and Discounts for Green Light Employees – a range of discounts have been negotiated with local and national retailers

This role requires an enhanced Disclosures and Barring Services (DBS) check. The costs of this are covered by Green Light as part of our safe recruitment processes.

Our employees are not required to wear a uniform at work.
