Job summary

Cats Protection in Exeter is seeking a Rehoming and Welfare Assistant to join the Centre team. This permanent role is 24 hours per week across three days, with some weekend shifts on a rota basis.

You will care for cats, assist with welfare tasks, engage with customers, and support volunteers. A driving license is essential, and we offer a supportive environment with development opportunities, pension, and 26 days’ leave.

Qualifications

• Requires driving licence as some driving of centre vans is required.
• Excellent communicator with strong empathy.
• Experience in customer service and dealing with the public.
• Experience of animal welfare including feeding, cleaning, medicating and handling cats.

Responsibilities

• Clean cat pens and litter trays in various centre sections.
• Feed and care for cats, including those needing medical or behavioural care.
• Present a professional and friendly image to customers and visitors.
• Assist with veterinary runs and may drive the Cats Protection vehicle off-site.
• Work with volunteers to coach and guide cat care duties.
• Support scheduling and preparation of rehoming information, viewings and adoptions.

Team: Centre

Location: Exeter

Work pattern: 24 hours per week over 3 days to include some weekend working on a rota basis (shifts are typically 8am - 4.45pm)

Salary: Up to £16,418.06 per year

Contract: Permanent

Responsibilities of our Rehoming and Welfare Assistant:

• Carry out cleaning of cat pens, including litter trays, in the various sections of the centre
• Feed and care for cats requiring additional medical or behavioural treatment as required. This also includes handling
• Present a professional and friendly image to customers and visitors
• As required, assist with veterinary runs, this may include driving the Cats Protection vehicle off-site
• Work with volunteers to coach and guide them on cat care duties
• Support with the scheduling and preparation of rehoming information, viewings and adoption of cats in care

About the centre team:

• Our adoption and homing centres care for thousands of cats each year until they are able to find a loving new home.
• Our team is made up of 18 employees in addition to volunteers

What we're looking for in our Rehoming and Welfare Assistant:

• A driving license is essential as some driving of our manual/automatic centre vans is required
• An excellent communicator with strong empathy
• Excellent customer service skills and experience of dealing with members of the public
• Experience of animal welfare, including feeding, cleaning, medicating and handling and a high level of understanding of how to meet welfare needs of cats
• Resilient with the ability to cope with potentially distressing and emotional situations
• A positive attitude and good at working as part of a team
• An understanding of health and safety and comfortable with manual handling tasks
