Job summary

Reading Borough Council is seeking a Lawyer – Regulatory and Prosecutions to provide expert legal advice across enforcement matters and regulatory issues. You will manage a varied caseload, advise Council officers and stakeholders, and help ensure timely, accurate legal work while upholding statutory duties.

You will work closely with colleagues across services, contribute to knowledge sharing and drive improvements in Legal Services.

Qualifications

• Qualified solicitor, barrister or CILEX Fellow with current practising certificate and entitlement to practise in England.
• Experience providing legal advice in regulatory, prosecutions, or local government contexts.
• Ability to manage caseload, give timely advice and handle complex issues.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on Regulatory and Prosecutions matters.
• Advise officers and stakeholders on complex, sensitive, potentially high-cost issues.
• Manage caseload, maintain progress updates and meet deadlines.
• Undertake advocacy in court or tribunals where appropriate.
• Support corporate objectives through practical legal guidance and collaboration.
• Contribute to training, knowledge-sharing and process improvements.
• Record time accurately and monitor costs and income.
