Job summary
Reading Borough Council is seeking a Principal Lawyer to lead the Advocacy Team and shape a specialist advocacy service. You will oversee complex cases, provide expert legal advice and drive improvements across the Legal Services function.
The role requires extensive post-qualification experience, strong advocacy and leadership skills, and the ability to engage with senior officers and elected Members. Hybrid working is available, with a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits.
Qualifications
- Significant post-qualification experience, ideally in local government or public sector.
- Strong advocacy skills and experience overseeing advocacy services.
- Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills.
Responsibilities
- Lead, manage and develop a team of legal professionals to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Act as a senior adviser on complex, high-risk, high-value matters.
- Oversee advocacy across a broad range of proceedings and hearings.
- Conduct and supervise significant, complex and high-profile cases.
- Provide strategic legal advice to senior officers, Members and committees.
- Support governance, decision-making and risk management within the service.
