We are particularly keen to hear from protected groups – including BAME, LGBT+ and people with a disability.

Job overview

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust covers a large geographic area which encompasses the Furness peninsula, the city of Lancaster and the Lake District.

We currently have a vacancy for a 32-hour part-time registered nurse in Ophthalmology at Furness General Hospital.

We provide a comprehensive range of acute and support hospital services to a population of 350,000 based around Morecambe Bay. One of the largest employers in the area, we have approximately 6,000 staff working across five sites: Furness General Hospital (Barrow in Furness), Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Westmorland General Hospital (Kendal), Ulverston Community Health Centre, and Queen Victoria Centre (Morecambe).

By joining us, you will be part of a progressive team committed to diversity, excellence, and achievement.

Main duties of the job

The Ophthalmology department cares for patients of all ages attending a wide range of ophthalmic clinics. We have Doctor / Nurse led clinics on all sites. Within this post, you will work in general and specialised Ophthalmology clinics including emergencies, laser treatment, and nurse-led assessment. This post also supports day care surgical lists.

You will undergo in-house training specialising in Ophthalmic Nursing care and development, with the opportunity in the future to undertake specialised courses.

You will be expected to complete the ophthalmic competencies required to work in the department.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case, and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
