As an integral member of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) healthcare team, the Registered Professional Nurse (RN) upholds the YNHHS mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives to provide the highest level of patient-centered care. The RN practices professional nursing within the legal and ethical frameworks established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. The role of the RN is exemplified by leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and a focus on quality outcomes. The RN provides care that:

  • Establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients and families, incorporating cultural and diversity considerations.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Respects patients' values, preferences, expressed needs, and healthcare knowledge in holistic data collection, care planning, and evaluation.
Responsibilities
  1. Standards of Practice: Guided by the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015), demonstrating competent nursing care through assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This includes data collection, analysis, care planning, implementation, coordination, health promotion, and evaluation.
  2. Standards of Professional Performance: Encompasses ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN practices ethically, promotes diversity and inclusion, communicates effectively, leads within their role, seeks ongoing education, and ensures safe and environmentally responsible practice.
Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing school; BSN preferred. Current BCLS certification required within one month of hire.

Experience: All RNs encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical program. Two years of acute care or oncology RN experience required; chemotherapy experience preferred.

Licensure: Current RN license in Connecticut; specialty certification encouraged.

Skills & Physical Demands: Prolonged standing, walking, sensory acuity, exposure to infectious diseases, handling end-of-life situations, moderate stress, physical strength to assist with patient mobility (up to 300 lbs).

Additional Information

Two years of acute or oncology RN experience required. Chemotherapy experience preferred.
