In palliative care no day is the same. Working on our inpatient unit provides a unique opportunity because we care for patients with such a variety of conditions and symptoms.

If youd like to develop your knowledge of many different conditions and the impact this has on patients and their families a role in palliative care with Sue Ryder is for you.

Our nurses play an indispensable role in providing compassionate, holistic care for patients with life-limiting illnesses. Their work extends far beyond medical tasks, encompassing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support for both patients and their families.

Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham is Gloucestershires only inpatient unit for specialist palliative care.

We support people aged 18 and over who are living with life-limiting conditions such as cancer, heart failure and lung disease by combining specialist medical care for managing pain and other symptoms with other emotional, practical and spiritual support.

We are able to provide care on our inpatient unit, virtually and in person though our community hub and in peoples home though our Hospice at Home service.

Job responsibilities

Our registered nurses work on a rotational shift pattern, including early shifts, late shifts, long days, nights, and weekends. As this role supports a 24/7 service, we are seeking candidates with flexibility to work a range of shifts as required.

The successful applicants will play an active role within our multidisciplinary team.

You will work alongside Specialty Doctors, therapy staff, volunteers and other vital members of the MDT taking a holistic approach in providing the best possible outcomes for each patient.

Duties include but are not limited to: Providing support, leadership, recognition and supervision to junior members of staff

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised clinical care for service users

Using evidence-based practice to develop and maintain high-quality care

Ensuring that the team provide all care in line with the care plan.

Helping to organise the admission and discharge of service users

Qualifications
  • About you:

  • Our ideal candidate will have experience of working in Palliative and End of Life Care.
  • This experience may come from a hospice or alternatively, for example, from a high dependency unit or oncology service.
  • They will have a genuine desire to improve the lives of those living with a life limiting condition.
  • Our empathetic, skilled and motivated nurses are the true foundation of what Sue Ryder does.
  • To become a registered Nurse at Sue Ryder you will need:
  • NMC registration and post-registration experience ideally in acute medical, hospice, or community settings.
  • Passion for palliative and end-of-life care (training provided for nurses from other specialisms).
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and initiative.
  • Evidence of continued professional development and willingness to learn.
  • If you are new to the NMC register, please speak with our recruitment team about preceptorship opportunities
  • We will provide a thorough induction with supernumerary time to settle into the role and full training/competency assessment will be provided.
  • There is plenty of scope to further develop your own skills in specialist palliative care, and planned career progression through our education programme and development framework is encouraged.
