Job summary

Portman Recruitment Limited is seeking an experienced Registered Manager to lead a children’s residential home in Sutton Coldfield. The home supports up to five young people aged 8–18, with admissions up to age 17, and focuses on child-centred care to help them develop independence and recognise their strengths.

You will oversee leadership, safeguarding, and regulatory compliance, while developing staff and ensuring high standards of care for young people with diverse needs.

Qualifications

• A recognised Social Work qualification or a Level 4+ equivalent relating to work with children.
• A Level 4+ management or leadership qualification; Level 5 Diploma noted in the job description.
• Enhanced DBS check suitable for working with children.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Residential care experience within the last five years; supervision/management experience.

Responsibilities

• Leading and developing the staff team through supervision, mentoring and professional development.
• Managing recruitment, staffing, workforce planning and training.
• Overseeing referrals, admissions and care practices to meet young people’s needs.
• Ensuring assessments, care plans, risk assessments and activity programmes are in place and reviewed.
• Monitoring care quality and compliance with Ofsted requirements and local guidance.
• Investigating incidents, complaints and safeguarding as per procedures.
• Building relationships with local authorities, social workers, therapists, Ofsted and other professionals.
• Managing budgets, occupancy, and temporary cover/agency use.
• Promoting a safe, child-centred environment and staying updated with legislation.

Registered Manager – Children's Residential Home
Location: Sutton Coldfield
Salary: £45,000–£47,000 per annum

Our client is looking for an experienced Registered Manager to lead a children's residential home in Sutton Coldfield.

The home supports up to five young people aged 8–18, with admissions up to age 17. The children have learning and physical disabilities and are supported through child-centred care that helps them develop, build independence and recognise their strengths. The team also encourages positive relationships with peers and adults, and provides the expertise and resources children need to work towards their individual goals.

The role

You’ll take responsibility for the home's leadership, quality of care and operational performance. You’ll develop and support the staff team, maintain strong safeguarding practice and ensure the service meets its regulatory and contractual requirements.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Leading and developing the staff team through supervision, mentoring and professional development.
• Managing recruitment, staffing, workforce planning and training.

About you

You’ll be an approachable and accountable leader who can motivate a team and maintain high standards of care. You’ll bring strong operational and financial management skills, with a clear commitment to safeguarding and positive outcomes for children.

Essential requirements:

• A recognised Social Work qualification or a relevant professional qualification at Level 4 or above relating to work with children.
• A Level 4 or above management or leadership qualification. Where undertaken after January 2011, the job description specifies the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services.
• An enhanced DBS check suitable for working with children.
• A full UK driving licence.
• At least two years’ residential care experience within the last five years.
• At least one year's experience supervising and managing staff.
• Residential experience supporting young people with SEMH needs.
• Knowledge of looked-after children's law and practice, residential childcare regulations, child development and young people's needs.
• Experience working with local authority social workers, therapists and commissioning teams.

Additional childcare or leadership qualifications, experience managing HR processes, and knowledge of local authority commissioning and placement processes are desirable.
