Job summary

Portman Recruitment seeks an experienced Registered Manager to take overall responsibility for a designated children’s home, ensuring high standards of care, safeguarding and Ofsted compliance while leading a dedicated residential team.

You will supervise staff, develop care plans and promote positive outcomes for young people, with a 37-hour week and occasional sleep-ins as required.

Qualifications

  • Experience as Registered Manager in a children's residential setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Ofsted regulations, safeguarding and children's residential care standards.
  • Experience managing an Ofsted-regulated children's home.
  • Experience leading, supervising and developing a residential care team.
  • Experience managing staff performance, disciplinary and grievance processes.
  • Strong organisational, administrative and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to promoting the welfare, safety and development of children.

Responsibilities

  • Take overall responsibility for the effective management and operation of the designated children's home or homes.
  • Ensure the highest standards of care, safeguarding and support are consistently maintained.
  • Ensure young people's individual care plans are implemented effectively and remain compliant with Ofsted standards and relevant LAC plans.
  • Lead, motivate and develop the residential care team.
  • Provide regular supervision, appraisals and performance reviews for staff.
  • Identify and address poor performance and manage disciplinary and grievance matters where required.
  • Develop and implement individual and team learning and development plans.
  • Chair regular team meetings and coordinate service performance reviews.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are implemented effectively and reviewed when required.
  • Maintain high standards of recording, administration, housekeeping, health and hygiene.
  • Ensure all records are maintained accurately and in accordance with data protection, confidentiality and relevant legislation.
  • Oversee the safe administration and recording of prescribed medication.
  • Ensure appropriate risk assessments are completed, monitored and reviewed.
  • Maintain the health and safety of young people, staff and visitors.
  • Prepare and maintain the home to a high standard for Ofsted inspections, Regulation 34 visits, internal audits and Local Authority compliance visits.
  • Ensure all actions arising from inspections, audits and quality assurance processes are addressed within required timescales.
  • Coordinate recruitment and selection to ensure a high-quality and suitably skilled staff team.
  • Attend and contribute to young people's reviews, care planning meetings and other professional meetings.
  • Promote equality, dignity, respect and positive outcomes for all young people.
  • Attend management and residential service meetings and contribute to the strategic development of the organisation.
  • Provide out-of-hours management support on a rota basis.
  • Support the wider development and continuous improvement of residential services.
  • Transport and support young people to school, family contact, health appointments and other activities where required.

Salary: £37,320 – £55,503 per annum, dependent on experience, services managed and additional responsibilities
Bonus: Up to £5,000 additional bonus based on occupancy and Ofsted reports
Sleep-In Allowance: £50 per sleep-in where required
Hours: 37 hours per week

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and committed Registered Manager to take overall responsibility for the management and development of a designated children's home or homes.

The successful candidate will provide strong leadership to the staff team, ensuring young people receive consistently high standards of care, safeguarding and support while promoting positive outcomes and independence.

You will have overall responsibility for ensuring the home operates in line with Ofsted regulations, legislation, safeguarding requirements and organisational policies, while maintaining a strong focus on quality assurance, staff development and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

About You

We are looking for an experienced children's residential professional with strong leadership skills and a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for young people.

You will ideally have:

  • Previous experience as a Registered Manager within a children's residential setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Ofsted regulations, safeguarding and children's residential care standards.
  • Experience managing an Ofsted-regulated children's home.
  • A strong understanding of care planning, risk assessments, safeguarding and LAC processes.
  • Experience preparing for and managing Ofsted inspections and Local Authority compliance visits.
  • Experience leading, supervising and developing a residential care team.
  • Experience managing staff performance, disciplinary and grievance processes.
  • Strong organisational, administrative and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to lead by example and create a positive team culture.
  • Strong understanding of quality assurance and continuous improvement.
  • The ability to remain calm, professional and solution-focused in challenging situations.
  • A commitment to promoting the welfare, safety and development of children and young people.
  • The flexibility to provide out-of-hours management support when required.
Driving Licence

A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is required, as the role involves transporting and supporting young people to school, family contact, appointments and activities.
